Could drinking water be the key to successful weight loss? Water is essential to the body, as it supplies it with nutrients and removes waste. Water is supplied to us through drinking and also through the food we eat.
In one study done by researchers at Virginia Tech, 48 participants were split into two groups to test the effect of drinking water before each meal. One group drank about 500mL of water before their meals, while the other group didn’t drink any water before their meals. Throughout the study, all the participants followed a low-calorie diet plan. After 12 weeks, the group that drank water before their meals and ate a low-calorie diet lost about 5 pounds more than the group that didn’t drink water before their low-calorie meals. After patients lost their weight, the group that drank water before their meals showed a significant improvement in weight loss maintenance than the group that did not drink water before meals while trying to maintain their weight. This shows that self-monitoring of increased water consumption may provide additional weight loss maintenance benefits.
