With the temperatures rising, vacations being taken, and the weather getting nicer, many people are now going outside more often to exercise. Although exercise can be great for your body, if the temperature is too high and precautions aren’t taken, it can also be very harmful and dangerous. Since both exercise and warm weather raise your internal temperature, the combination of the two can cause many problems. Fueling your workout properly and trying to remain cool are both crucial in getting the most out of your workout. Working out in the heat and sunlight causes the body to sweat more, so drinking more water is necessary in order to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is crucial for the motor and neurological function of the body. Drinking sugary or caffeinated beverages can cause you to become dehydrated faster, so water is the best choice. A lack of water and extremely high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke if you aren’t cautious. The signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headache or nausea. This is a serious condition and a person should seek medical attention immediately.
The body is cooled through sweating and evaporation, and humidity can interfere with this by causing sweat to evaporate slower. This raises your heart rate as your body tries to remain cool. So, check the weather report before a workout, and if it is very hot and humid, try to cut back on your exercise to avoid causing problems. While exercising outside, try to wear light-colored clothes and fabrics that wick the sweat away from the body. Although physical activity is great for your overall health, exercising in too hot of weather can actually be counter-productive.
